New Year’s is traditionally a time for resolutions. We all make some. Do we keep them? How about working with the Gospel Credo as found in Luke’s Gospel 6:27-38? It might take some of us all year to get through those! A monk-story might do the trick.
A holy monk was once given a most precious bible by a wealthy man grateful to be freed from his sins and addictions. Though the ancient book was worth a fortune, the monk placed it openly in his small hut as a focus for meditation and prayer.
One day a destitute and sick man wandered by. He was wounded and seemed half alive. The holy monk took him in and for many months cared for him, eventually nurtured him back to health. As he got better, the man, a felon and thief as it turned out, became more and more interested in the Bible that he could see was worth much money. Soon the temptation of greed became too strong. One day while the monk was out ministering to the poor, he snatched the Bible and fled.
As it turned out, he was eventually caught in connection with another crime and put in prison. The police returned the bible to the monk. Upon receiving it, however, the monk traveled to the village where the man was held. He forgave him, handed him back the book and left. The thief was delighted. It would fetch much money when he was freed. After a year, the thief was released, but during his imprisonment he’d had time to think. It wasn’t long before he appeared at the hut of the old monk and handed him back the Bible. “Oh,” said the monk. “You can keep it. It will bring you much money!” The thief cried out, “I don’t want the book, I don’t want money! I want – I want whatever it is that made you give it back. I want what’s inside of you that makes you able to do this.”
What is in each of us that keeps us faithful during a time of pandemic or any other adverse situation that comes our way?

El Año Nuevo es tradicionalmente una época de resoluciones. Todos hacemos algunos. ¿Los guardamos? ¿Qué tal trabajar con el Credo del Evangelio que se encuentra en el Evangelio de Lucas 6: 27-38? ¡Puede que a algunos de nosotros nos lleve todo el año superarlos! Una historia de monje podría ser la solución.
Una vez, un hombre rico le dio a un santo monje una Biblia preciosa, agradecido de ser liberado de sus pecados y adicciones. Aunque el libro antiguo valía una fortuna, el monje lo colocó abiertamente en su pequeña cabaña como foco de meditación y oración.
Un día pasó un hombre indigente y enfermo. Estaba herido y parecía medio vivo. El santo monje lo acogió y durante muchos meses lo cuidó, finalmente lo cuidó hasta que recuperó la salud. A medida que mejoraba, el hombre, un delincuente y ladrón, se interesó cada vez más en la Biblia que podía ver que valía mucho dinero. Pronto la tentación de la codicia se hizo demasiado fuerte. Un día, mientras el monje estaba ministrando a los pobres, arrebató la Biblia y huyó.
Al final resultó que, finalmente fue capturado en relación con otro crimen y encarcelado. La policía le devolvió la Biblia al monje. Sin embargo, al recibirlo, el monje viajó al pueblo donde estaba detenido el hombre. Lo perdonó, le devolvió el libro y se fue. El ladrón estaba encantado. Traería mucho dinero cuando fuera liberado. Después de un año, el ladrón fue puesto en libertad, pero durante su encarcelamiento había tenido tiempo para pensar. No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que apareciera en la cabaña del anciano monje y le devolviera la Biblia. “Oh,” dijo el monje. “Puedes quedártelo. ¡Te traerá mucho dinero! ” El ladrón gritó: “¡No quiero el libro, no quiero dinero! Quiero … quiero lo que sea que te hizo devolverlo. Quiero lo que hay dentro de ti que te permita hacer esto “.
¿Qué hay en cada uno de nosotros que nos mantiene fieles durante un tiempo de pandemia o cualquier otra situación adversa que se nos presente?
