“You messed up!”
“Why do you speak to the people in parables?” Stories are easier to remember than concepts or logical outlines. About 30 of Jesus’ masterful parables have survived in the Gospels. While He is telling the stories in chapter 13 of Matthew, Jesus is floating offshore in a boat, projecting his voice to the large crowds that have gathered. Because the stories concern their daily lives – farming, baking bread, hunting buried treasures, fishing – He keeps their interest.
A contemporary story He would probably tell over and over again: The priest received a phone call from a very irate father who told him in no uncertain terms, “I hold you personally responsible for this!” He was angry because his newly graduated daughter had decided, in his words, “to throw it all away and go do mission work in Haiti with the Jesuit volunteers. Isn’t that absurd!” He went on, “She has an M.B.S. degree from Scranton and she’s going off to dig ditches in Haiti! I hold you responsible for this!”
“Why me?” asked the priest. The father said, “You filled her mind with this religious stuff.” The priest was not intimidated and shot back, “Sir, weren’t you the one who had her baptized?” “Well, yes,” said the father, “but what does that have to do with anything?” “And didn’t you send her to CCD classes when she was a little girl?” “Well, yes.” “And didn’t you allow your daughter to go on those trips to Appalachia when she was in high school?” “Well, yes, I thought it would look good on her resume. Again, what does that have to do with anything?” “Sir,” said the priest, “You’re the reason she’s throwing it all away. You introduced her to Jesus, not me.” “But” protested the father, “all we wanted was for her to be raised Catholic.” “Well, sorry, sir, but you messed up. You’ve gone and made a disciple.”
“Yeah, but …”
A resume Catholic or a serious one. “Yeah, but…” Will all the “yeah, buts” please stand and be counted?

“¡Te equivocaste!”
“¿Por qué hablas con la gente en parábolas?” Las historias son más fáciles de recordar que los conceptos o esquemas lógicos. Alrededor de 30 de las parábolas magistrales de Jesús han sobrevivido en los Evangelios. Mientras cuenta las historias en el capítulo 13 de Mateo, Jesús está flotando en alta mar en un bote, proyectando su voz a las grandes multitudes que se han reunido. Debido a que las historias se refieren a su vida cotidiana (agricultura, hornear pan, cazar tesoros enterrados, pescar), mantiene su interés.
Una historia contemporánea que probablemente contaría una y otra vez: el sacerdote recibió una llamada telefónica de un padre muy furioso que le dijo en términos muy claros: “¡Te considero personalmente responsable de esto! Estaba enojado porque su hija recién graduada había decidido, en sus palabras, “tirar todo a la basura e ir a hacer trabajo misionero en Haití con los voluntarios jesuitas. ¡No es tan absurdo! ” Él continuó: “Ella tiene un M.B.S. grado de Scranton y ella se va a cavar zanjas en Haití! ¡Te hago responsable de esto!
“¿Por qué yo?” preguntó el sacerdote. El padre dijo: “Llenaste su mente con estas cosas religiosas”. El sacerdote no se sintió intimidado y respondió: “Señor, ¿no fue usted quien la bautizó?” “Bueno, sí”, dijo el padre, “pero ¿qué tiene eso que ver con algo?” “¿Y no la enviaste a clases de Catecismo cuando era una niña?” “Bueno, sí.” “¿Y no permitiste que tu hija hiciera esos viajes a Appalachia cuando estaba en la secundaria?” “Bueno, sí, pensé que se vería bien en su currículum. De nuevo, ¿qué tiene eso que ver con algo? “Señor”, dijo el sacerdote, “usted es la razón por la que está tirando todo. Le presentaste a Jesús, no a mí. “Pero”, protestó el padre, “todo lo que queríamos era que fuera criada como católica”. “Bueno, lo siento, señor, pero se equivocó. Te fuiste e hiciste un discípulo “.
