Tuesday of Holy Week 2021
The Judases and Peters!
The next two days are hard ones. Friends betraying! Are there still Judases and Peters around? Where do we stand with Jesus in these few days before his death? Do we hear the question, “Oh, you will lay down your life for me, will you? I tell you truly, the cock will not crow before you have three times disowned me!”
Perhaps we can grow into the awareness that Maryknoll Sister Ita Ford, one of the four American women killed in El Salvador in 1980, showed when she prayed: “Am I willing to suffer with the people here, the suffering of the powerless, those who feel impotent? Can I say to my neighbors – I have no solutions to the situation, I don’t know the answers, but I will walk with you, be with you? Can I let myself be evangelized by this opportunity? Can I look at and accept my own poorness and learn from other poor ones?”
Are we Peter – trusting in our own strengths, gifts, and knowledge, which are pitifully inadequate? Are we Judas – intent on our own agenda, not understanding the evil of others or of the structures that use individual weakness for their own ends? Are we disciples – sitting at the table with Jesus, content in our relationship with God, not wanting to hear because we are afraid, reluctant to stand with Jesus among those who stand for justice, for life, for welcoming the stranger, caring for the earth and for one another?
Do we really seek and find and understand and do the Will of God? The list of those who model total attention to the will of God for the world is legion: the martyrs of the Church, the prophets of Israel, the great saints who resisted the temptation to please the system rather than do the will of God. And countless numbers of them in our own time and world: Thomas Merton, the monks of Tibhirine, the women martyrs of El Salvador, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Franz Jagerstatter, Dorothy Day, Mahatma Gandhi – all confronted the demands of obeisance to personal power with obedience to the law of God.

¡Los Judas y Peters!
Los próximos dos días son difíciles. Amigos traicionando! ¿Todavía hay Judas y Peters por aquí? ¿Dónde nos encontramos con Jesús en estos pocos días antes de su muerte? ¿Escuchamos la pregunta, “Oh, darás tu vida por mí, verdad? ¡De cierto te digo que el gallo no cantará antes de que me hayas repudiado tres veces!
Tal vez podamos tomar conciencia de lo que demostró la hermana Maryknoll, Ita Ford, una de las cuatro mujeres estadounidenses asesinadas en El Salvador en 1980, cuando oró: “¿Estoy dispuesta a sufrir con la gente de aquí, el sufrimiento de los impotentes, los que te sientes impotente? ¿Puedo decirles a mis vecinos: no tengo soluciones para la situación, no sé las respuestas, pero caminaré con ustedes, estaré con ustedes? ¿Puedo dejarme evangelizar por esta oportunidad? ¿Puedo mirar y aceptar mi propia pobreza y aprender de otros pobres? “
¿Somos Pedro, confiando en nuestras propias fortalezas, dones y conocimientos, que son lamentablemente inadecuados? ¿Somos Judas, atentos a nuestra propia agenda, sin comprender la maldad de los demás o de las estructuras que utilizan la debilidad individual para sus propios fines? ¿Somos discípulos – sentados a la mesa con Jesús, contentos en nuestra relación con Dios, sin querer escuchar porque tenemos miedo, reacios a estar con Jesús entre los que defienden la justicia, la vida, la acogida del extraño, el cuidado del la tierra y el uno para el otro?
¿Realmente buscamos, encontramos, entendemos y hacemos la Voluntad de Dios? La lista de aquellos que modelan la atención total a la voluntad de Dios para el mundo es legión: los mártires de la Iglesia, los profetas de Israel, los grandes santos que resistieron la tentación de agradar al sistema en lugar de hacer la voluntad de Dios . E innumerables de ellos en nuestro propio tiempo y mundo: Thomas Merton, los monjes de Tibhirine, las mujeres mártires de El Salvador, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Franz Jagerstatter, Dorothy Day, Mahatma Gandhi, todos enfrentaron las demandas. de reverencia al poder personal con obediencia a la ley de Dios.
