“I cried like a baby”
The book of Mark is like a newspaper story. It gives all the facts with lots of action.
“He approached her, took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.” What a moment of dramatic action between two people? Fast forward! “Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place where he prayed.”
Mark’s motif in his gospel is healing. His code words are fear and faith, which get tangled up with healing. There is a choice to be made between fear and faith. When you choose one, it knocks the other out. However, some people do battle with the two. Saints have done it, like Thomas Becket, Francis of Assisi, Dorothy Day, Teresa of Calcutta, so maybe it’s not a losing battle after all.
Michael Lerner said, “I would pay a great deal of attention to the inner healing process that I hoped a cancer diagnosis would trigger in me. I would give careful thought to the meaning of my life, what I had to let go of and what I wanted to keep.”
Fred’s terminally ill life became peaceful. He said, “Something amazing happened. I simply stopped doing everything that wasn’t essential, that didn’t matter.” But when the doctors changed their minds and said it was a rare but curable disease, Fred said, “When I heard this over the telephone, I cried like a baby – because I was afraid my life would go back to the way it used to be.” (Peter Senge and others, Presence: Human Purpose and the Field of the Future. 2004.)
Jesus cured some, not all. He was more interested in healing of the soul. Jesus shows full consistency between what he says and does. How coherent is your life with the ideals that you claim to have?
