4th Sunday of Advent
Have you had your annunciation?
In the Philadelphia Museum of Art there is a painting of the Annunciation by an artist named Henry Ossawa Tanner. It shows Mary as a young girl sitting on her disheveled bed, and there is this light in front of her. It must be right after the angel has spoken to her. And Mary is just sitting there, looking at the light with her mouth open, surprised. She has this look on her face that says, “What, are you kidding? How can this be?” She is stunned, confused, scared to the point that the angel is compelled to say, “Do not be afraid.”
Denise Levertov’s poem, Annunciation, ends with what Christian tradition calls “Mary’s Fiat” (Latin for “Let it be!”):
“She did not cry, “I cannot, I am not worthy.” Nor, “I have not the strength.” She did not submit with gritted teeth, raging, coerced. Bravest of all humans, consent illumined her. Consent, courage unparalleled, opened her utterly.” (A Door in the Hive, 1989)
Earlier in the poem, Levertov reflects on the annunciation in all of our lives:
“Aren’t there annunciations of one sort or another in most lives? Some unwillingly undertake great destinies, enact them in sullen pride, uncomprehending. More often those moments when roads of light and storm open from darkness in a man or woman are turned away from in dread, in a wave of weakness, in despair and with relief. Ordinary lives continue, God does not smite them. But the gates close, the pathway vanishes.”
It could be that our lives are visited by revelations and calls to commitment. Before the gates close and the offer is rescinded let us respond with our “Fiat”! Let’s get totally involved with the diocesan Mission 2030 program. It could help with the healing process after the pandemic.
Is there a bad habit that needs dealing with, an indifference that needs to be fired up, an addiction that calls for attention, a relationship that needs healing, a priority that needs to be put in place? Manos a la obra!!
I think God is sending another angel. A joyous, healthy and holy Christmas and New Years to all, and to all a “good night.”

¿Has tenido tu anunciación?
En el Museo de Arte de Filadelfia hay una pintura de la Anunciación de un artista llamado Henry Ossawa Tanner. Muestra a María como una niña sentada en su cama despeinada, y hay una luz frente a ella. Debe ser justo después de que el ángel le ha hablado. Y Mary está sentada allí, mirando la luz con la boca abierta, sorprendida. Ella tiene esta mirada en su rostro que dice: “¿Qué, estás bromeando? ¿Cómo puede ser esto?” Ella está aturdida, confundida, asustada hasta el punto que el ángel se ve obligado a decir: “No tengas miedo”.
El poema de Denise Levertov, Anunciación, termina con lo que la tradición cristiana llama “Fiat de María” (latín para “¡Déjalo ser!”):
“Ella no lloró:” No puedo, no soy digna “. Tampoco, “no tengo la fuerza”. Ella no se sometió con los dientes apretados, furiosa, coaccionada. Al principio del poema, Levertov reflexiona sobre la anunciación en todas nuestras vidas:

Más a menudo esos momentos en que los caminos de la luz y la tormenta se abren desde la oscuridad en un hombre o una mujer se apartan con pavor, en una ola de debilidad, desesperación y alivio. Las vidas ordinarias continúan, Dios no las golpea. Pero las puertas se cierran, el camino se desvanece “.
Podría ser que nuestras vidas sean visitadas por revelaciones y llamados al compromiso. Antes de que se cierren las puertas y se anule la oferta, respondamos con nuestro “Fiat”. Participemos totalmente en el programa diocesano Misión 2030. Podría ayudar con el proceso de curación después de la pandemia.
¿Existe un mal hábito que necesita ser tratado, una indiferencia que necesita ser activada, una adicción que requiere atención, una relación que necesita curarse, una prioridad que necesita ponerse en marcha? Manos a la obra !!
Creo que Dios está enviando otro ángel. Una feliz, sana y santa Navidad y Año Nuevo para todos, y para todos una “buena noche”
