The Assumption of Mary
What’s this all about? How can this be? What does God want? How can this happen? How can I do this? Mary is all those throughout the ages who have cried out, “How can I tackle this challenge? How can I survive? What does God want of me?
When her son was born somebody wanted his life. People can identify with her today. There are people out there waiting to kill their children. People who are waiting to sell their children drugs, the media that glamorizes uncommitted sex, and the hawkers. Parents know what Mary knew and fear what she feared.
Mary had to flee with her husband and child and become a refugee in a foreign land and join the displaces persons, the homeless and the 30 million refugees walking the earth today.
When Jesus is an adolescent, Mary loses her child, and can’t find him in a crowded city. She becomes every parent, every teacher, every mentor who can’t communicate with a teenager, who loses them to gangs or drugs, whose kids have joined the small army of runaways roaming the streets, exploited by the sex trade, abused and beaten. Many can identify with Mary here.
At some point Mary becomes a widow. Everyone who has lost a spouse can identify with her.
When her son is old enough, he leaves home to begin his mission and he leaves a widowed mother behind and suddenly every mother and father who see their children grow up and leave them behind know what she is feeling in her heart.
Then her son is caught. She has to stay at a distance. And suddenly every parent who wants more than anything else to help their grown children dealing with alcoholism, living in sin, raising their children on nothing, not even having them baptized, going through a divorce – every parent who witnesses such “crucifixions” can identify with Mary and have to pray and suffer in silence.
Finally, she cradles his broken body in her arms. Once more every parent who has lost a child, any friend who has lost a friend, any classmate who has lots a classmate for whatever reason, can identify with Mary.
She is the woman for All Seasons. Go to her, she comes to you.

La Asunción de María
¿De qué se trata todo esto? ¿Cómo puede ser esto? ¿Qué quiere Dios? ¿Cómo puede pasar esto? ¿Cómo puedo hacer esto? María son todos aquellos a lo largo de los siglos que han clamado: “¿Cómo puedo enfrentar este desafío? ¿Cómo puedo sobrevivir? ¿Qué quiere Dios de mí?
Cuando nació su hijo, alguien quiso su vida. La gente puede identificarse con ella hoy. Hay gente esperando para matar a sus hijos. Personas que esperan vender drogas a sus hijos, los medios de comunicación que dan glamour al sexo sin compromiso y los vendedores ambulantes. Los padres saben lo que Mary sabía y temen lo que ella temía.
Mary tuvo que huir con su esposo e hijo y convertirse en refugiada en una tierra extranjera y unirse a las personas desplazadas, las personas sin hogar y los 30 millones de refugiados que caminan por la tierra hoy.
Cuando Jesús es un adolescente, María pierde a su hijo y no puede encontrarlo en una ciudad abarrotada. Ella se convierte en cada padre, cada maestro, cada mentor que no puede comunicarse con un adolescente, que los pierde por las pandillas o las drogas, cuyos hijos se han unido al pequeño ejército de fugitivos que deambulan por las calles, explotados por el comercio sexual, abusados y golpeados. Muchos pueden identificarse con María aquí.
En algún momento, María se queda viuda. Todos los que han perdido a su cónyuge pueden identificarse con ella.
Cuando su hijo tiene la edad suficiente, se va de casa para comenzar su misión y deja atrás a una madre viuda y, de repente, cada madre y cada padre que ven crecer a sus hijos y los dejan atrás saben lo que ella siente en su corazón.
Entonces atrapan a su hijo. Tiene que mantenerse a distancia. Y de repente, todo padre que quiere más que nada ayudar a sus hijos adultos a lidiar con el alcoholismo, vivir en pecado, criar a sus hijos sin nada, ni siquiera bautizarlos, pasar por un divorcio, todo padre que sea testigo de tales “crucifixiones” puede identificar con María y tener que rezar y sufrir en silencio.
Finalmente, acuna su cuerpo roto en sus brazos. Una vez más, todo padre que ha perdido a un hijo, cualquier amigo que ha perdido a un amigo, cualquier compañero de clase que tiene muchos compañeros de clase por cualquier motivo, puede identificarse con Mary.
