May 3, Fourth Sunday of Easter.
“Let’s roll.”
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” These words have found their way into movies and music; in rap (Kanye West), heavy metal (Megadeth), and rock (Pink Floyd). The psalm offers hope in times of trouble and used in movies such as Rooster Cogburn (1975), A River Runs Through it (1992), Titanic (1997), and The Magnificent Seven (2016). In The Amazing Spider-Man #526, published in 2005, the Spider-Man believes he is dying after fighting the character Morlun. His thoughts turn to the words of Psalm 23 for comfort.
Todd Beamer was a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Of the four hijacked planes, United Flight 93 was the only one that didn’t hit its target, which is commonly believed to have been the United States Capitol Building. Beamer and other passengers on board the flight stormed the cockpit and thwarted the hijackers.
Todd Beamer was one of the passengers who led the effort to stop the terrorists on the flight. Before they stormed the cockpit, Beamer made a call to an operator for United Airlines, who recited Psalm 23 with him. Although Beamer and the passengers prevented the hijackers from accomplishing their objectives, the plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. All forty-four people on the plane, including the terrorists, were killed. Beamer’s last words heard by the operator before the crash were “Let’s roll!” The words are also the title of his wife’s book reflecting on his life and that fateful day in American and world history.
John 10:9 “I’m like a gate,” is one of those delightful verses that our faith formation teachers can easily explain to the children! Jesus is the door. Catholicism deals with many things: sacraments, creeds, rituals, etc. but principally a person – Jesus Christ.
We go in and out a door. We go into the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. We go out the door of the church to witness, principally to family, friends and fellow parishioners, what we have heard during those Eucharistic moments. As one little boy said: “The best part of the Mass is when the priest says, “The Mass is ended, go in peace.” He explained why – to go and proclaim the Good News with your lives.
The pandemic has given us lots of time for reading, reflecting and reminiscing. I came across these words from James Corden, “When all else fails, the power of a good deep breath, a chuckle with a friend, and a glass of wine should never be underestimated.”

Juan 10: 9 “¡Soy como una puerta!” Es uno de esos deliciosos versículos que nuestros maestros de formación en la fe pueden explicar fácilmente a los niños. Jesús es la puerta. El catolicismo se ocupa de muchas cosas: sacramentos, credos, rituales, etc., pero principalmente una persona: Jesucristo. Entramos y salimos por una puerta. Entramos en la presencia de Jesús en la Eucaristía. Salimos por la puerta de la iglesia para presenciar, principalmente a familiares, amigos y compañeros feligreses, lo que hemos escuchado durante esos momentos eucarísticos. Como dijo un niño: “La mejor parte de la misa es cuando el sacerdote dice:” La misa ha terminado, ve en paz “. Explicó por qué, para ir y proclamar las Buenas Nuevas con sus vidas.
